This would be the second part of my Travel-Life series. Here I am going to share our experience in Ohiya.

Ohiya is a small village situated in Uwa province, very close to Hortain plains national park. Its located in between Hortain plains to Haputale road.

Our plan was to visit Hortain Plains national park early morning and then come Ohiya railway station and then go to Hill Safari home stay . Just as Dale Philip did in this video.

Ohiya Railway station

We came to Ohiya railway station from Hortain plains, and tried to locate Hotel. Mobile operators were not working throughout this journey. After asking a local about hotel, understood that we have came passing that it, approximately 5kms. We looked for a tuk tuk, and all of them went to Ella and other places with travelers as there was a train delay due to derailed train.

We had no choice but to walk back 5km. The entire journey through a forest, so it was not tiring journey as we expected. After around 2 hours walk we finally reached the hotel.

Hill safari eco lodge

They provide very user friendly service. There were just one Russian couple at that time, but evening around 10 Chinese tourists came. One special thing with them was, they have dinner include in B&B basis.

Evening sun-set

As property manager said, in a clear day you can see up to Dondra Head .

I am not a good story teller, so let me give you some advises for anyone who is willing to visit Ohiya.

  • Best place to stay, you already know.
  • There are no mobile operators signals. Hotel offers good WiFi connection.
  • Temperature can drop below 10C at night.
  • If you go by your own vehicle, road conditions were not good for low ground clearance vehicles ( as January 2020).
  • If you go by train, make sure you contact hotel manager, they will arrange a vehicle from station.
  • If you willing to do more hiking, then there are many options available. Wangedigala, Bambarakanda waterfall through Dewil’s staircase.

This is a short description, this is an experience you must get.
